The first group of hatched turtles enter the Persian Gulf waters from their protected centre in Kish
The first group of hatched baby turtles enters the Persian Gulf waters from the Kish Island protected monitoring centre located in the south of the island. The programme for the protection of turtle nests and eggs was carried out for the second time running this year in the southern and western shores of Kish Island with the continuous presence of environmentalists. The KFZO environmental expert told IRNA on Tuesday: The first stage of laying eggs began on March 23rd this year and around four thousand turtle eggs are currently being protected in 35 nests at the centre. Maryam Mohammadi added: Apart from the main centre for the protection of turtles, there are numerous nests on the sandy southern and western shores of the island which are looked after by KFZ environmentalists. She asked the public to inform the KFZ environmental department of any turtle nests they might spot on the island shores. Mohammadi also asked Kish Island residents and tourists to refrain from parking cars with lit headlights on the sandy southern and western shores and not leave any refuse behind in these areas. As reported by IRNA, the KFZ environmental expert added: In order to protect this endangered marine species, a programme began last year with the cooperation of four environmentalists and three experts. One of the KFZO environmentalists also commented on the turtle protection programme: In this programme, environmentalists work around the clock and check the turtle eggs and hatched babies once every half hour.
